The last couple weeks have been pretty tough thinking about this absolutely bittersweet day.  The day that my mom moves back to her home in India. For the first time in our lives, we’ll be living half a world away from each other.  I
The last couple weeks have been pretty tough thinking about this absolutely bittersweet day.  The day that my mom moves back to her home in India. For the first time in our lives, we’ll be living half a world away from each other.  Instead of a 1 hour flight, it will be a 30 hour journey to see her. Instead of seeing her when I want, now maybe it’ll be lucky to see her a couple times a year.  But, after 40 years of teaching (20 in the US) she deserves to finally relax, retire and enjoy the time with her mom, family and friends in the town that she grew up in as a little girl. She has sacrificed so much for me and helping me to get where I am at today. I still have no idea how she managed to pay out of state tuition for me, supported my living expenses and supported my parents’ living expenses for multiple years - all off of a teacher’s salary. I can’t imagine how it will be when my dad leaves later this year as well. As an only brat, thinking about the fact that the only immediate family will be so far away is tough, but I know it’s something that we had to choose. They will be happy back in the country that is home for them - even after being away for 38+ years. For now, as I sit here in the airport after dropping her off at her gate, waiting to go on another work trip, I am so sad, but excited for my mom and her new chapter. #parents #family #retirement #manoj2024

Some of you all know the story. But after 19 years, 1 month and 6 days... My parents are finally able to join me in the blue passport club. Insane to just think back to the hundreds of immigration forms, thousands and thousands of $$$ and the infinite stress over the last almost 2 decades. Leaving India 35+ years ago, working hard in the Caribbean to get to the US so I could have a good life. Sacrificing so much, doing it all the right way but the hard way - they did it all for me and I couldn't be more grateful, proud and happy! #citizenship #uscitizenship #americandream #manoj2024
